Thinning with turpentine

By painting turpentine or white spirit into oil paint already applied to the support you can achieve some exciting effects, as the detail from Cleaning the Nets, Lympstone shown right demonstrates. The board was first primed with gesso and texture paste and when this was dry the underpainting was blocked in with a ‘turpentine wash’ using French Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna. If you use this technique with the board held almost vertically the turpentine will run down to add extra texture. Leave this to dry for a short while before painting into it further.
